Halloween: Tricks, Treats, but No Cavities!

As Halloween approaches, excitement builds around costumes and sweets. But this candy-filled celebration also raises a few questions about the effects of sugar on dental health. How can we fully enjoy Halloween without putting our teeth at risk?

To answer this question, we turned to dental hygienist Diellza Zhubi, who shared her valuable tips on how to enjoy Halloween candy while keeping the risk of cavities to a minimum.

Diellza Zhubi's first piece of advice is simple: "Frequency matters more than quantity." Every time we consume sugar, our tooth enamel is exposed to an acid attack. It is therefore better to limit how often we snack on sweets and enjoy candy at the end of meals rather than throughout the day.

The dental hygienist also recommends keeping all the collected treats in a box and setting specific times, or agreeing on them with children, to enjoy them. This simple trick gives teeth a break between eating occasions. Saliva can then fully perform its natural protective role: it helps wash away food particles, neutralizes acids, and provides calcium and phosphate, which contribute to the remineralization of tooth enamel. Another useful tip: drinking a glass of water after eating candy helps wash away some of the sugary residue.

Not All Candy Is Created Equal

Sticky sweets, such as caramels or certain gummy candies, as well as lollipops that are enjoyed over a long period of time, prolong the contact between sugar and teeth.

By contrast, chewing sugar-free gum after a meal stimulates saliva production and therefore helps protect teeth. Be careful, though: chewing gum containing sugar can contribute to the development of cavities.

For those looking to choose more tooth-friendly treats, there is also a useful guide: the "Toothfriendly" label, recognizable by its little tooth-shaped character holding an umbrella. This label identifies products that have been tested and shown not to promote tooth decay or dental erosion. It can be found on certain sugar-free chewing gums and candies.

Proper Brushing to Prevent Cavities

Diellza Zhubi recommends brushing your teeth two to three times a day with fluoride toothpaste, without forgetting to clean between your teeth.

For younger children, parental guidance is particularly important. It helps ensure that brushing is done correctly, that all tooth surfaces are cleaned, and that no areas are missed.

Above all, Halloween should remain a time for celebration, sharing, and enjoying treats. There is no need to ban candy altogether or make children feel guilty!

By enjoying sweets at specific times, choosing treats wisely, and maintaining good oral hygiene, children and adults alike can make the most of Halloween without letting cavities become their worst nightmare.
