Surgical stainless steel 316L

316L stainless steel, often referred to as surgical steel, is a premium alloy known for its exceptional strength and its suitability for medical environments. It is commonly used in the manufacture of surgical instruments and implants. Its hypoallergenic properties and high resistance to corrosion make it a reliable, safe and durable material.

The same 316L steel is also widely used in jewellery, piercings and the watchmaking industry. Thanks to its polished finish, it retains its shine and offers a premium aesthetic, making it a popular choice for luxury watches.

For your Berninox toothbrush handle, 316L stainless steel is an ideal material: it guarantees outstanding durability, excellent resistance to moisture and essential hygienic properties for bathroom use. It is also a sustainable choice, as it is infinitely recyclable and offers an exceptionally long lifespan.

For all these reasons, we have chosen 316L stainless steel for the Berninox handle. Its durability, recyclability and hygienic qualities make it one of the best materials available today. We use European-sourced steel, originating from Italy or Germany.

Premium bristles

At Berninox, we offer two types of bristles for gentle and effective cleaning. Berninox interdental bristles have a tapered shape designed to thoroughly clean interdental spaces and the gingival sulcus, while remaining flexible and gentle on the gums. They belong to a new generation of bristles made from recycled material (rPBT), sourced from PET bottles (56%).

This choice allows us to achieve bristles that are both soft and durable, with excellent long-term performance, unlike certain castor-oil-based alternatives that may wear out more quickly.

An outer ring of gingival bristles made from medical-grade elastomer (TPE) provides additional softness. It is ideal for sensitive gums and also helps reduce staining on enamel, for visibly cleaner teeth.

All our bristles are premium quality and have been tested and approved by dentists and dental hygienists, ensuring effective brushing while respecting gingival tissues.

For optimal hygiene, Berninox toothbrush heads can be washed in the dishwasher. During colds or whenever maximum hygiene is desired, they can also be steam-sterilised by boiling in water. They are 100% made in Switzerland.

Ocean-bound plastic

At Berninox, we use recycled plastic from the Swiss company Tide Ocean SA to produce the base of our toothbrush heads. This material is selected according to strict criteria to ensure it is safe, stable and perfectly suited for oral use.

By choosing this premium recycled plastic, we fully embrace a circular economy approach, giving value to a resource that would otherwise pollute the environment.

The term ocean-bound plastic (OBP) refers to plastic waste abandoned in nature near oceans (within a maximum radius of 50 km), in areas without proper waste management and therefore at high risk of ending up in the sea. These at-risk plastics are estimated to account for around 80% of marine litter.

By acting before this waste reaches the ocean, OBP helps significantly reduce plastic pollution.

#tide works with local communities in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines to collect these plastics before they reach the ocean. The company organises beach clean-ups and ensures fair compensation for waste collectors, contributing to the development of local waste collection and management systems.

Ocean-bound plastic is then transformed by #tide into a safe, premium material. For our toothbrushes, we use #tide material certified by the FDA, meaning it meets the safety requirements of the Food and Drug Administration. Developed in partnership with scientists from the University of Applied Sciences in Rapperswil, #tide material is also compliant with REACH and RoHS regulations.

Finally, #tide material has received several awards, including the Materialica Design & Technology Award (2019), the Swiss Plastics Sustainability Award (2020) and the Swiss Plastic Award (2023). Its environmental and social impact is certified by recognised standards, including Ocean-Bound Plastic, Global Recycle Standard and Recycled Claim Standard.
